What results when a land of rich and multifarious literary resource, numerous musical legends and a huge and active middle class encounters a wave of modernization in the musical sphere ?What happens when it brings in new blood into the life of the common man and also encourages the new generation of youngsters to express their emotions, nostalgia, aggression, pain and anguish more zealously in a common channel, a common element that provides solace to all, a sort of release ? The new age Bengali youths seem to have found that release in Bengali Bands. The 500 plus Bangla Rock bands today derive their musical influences from the western legends like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, and emulate them. But we should put all credit to the Bangla band Mohiner Ghoraguli for pioneering these so called alternative form of music in Bengal. Though they were not able to grab the crowd during there time, they became the visionary for the upcoming bands. It was there work that showed the path to all of today's popular bands. Today most albums by popular bands sell like hot cakes the moment they hit stores and Band performances draw huge crowds mostly comprising of young school and college-goers as well as age defying music loving uncles and aunties, among the huge melee of youngsters. Bangla music is for everybody.Bangla rockers make sure they retain the distinct Bengaliness in their music in spite of the heavy guitars and drums. It is this blend of western instruments with indigenous lyrics and tunes that imparts Bangla music it’s distinctive charm.Kolkata is able to provide some fine platforms for these bands to perform in and a sizeable audience to perform before. Nazrul Manch, Someplace Else are undoubtedly able to cater to the tastes of the hyper active and enthusiastic audience for English and Bengali music, simlutaneously providing a wide platform for the Bands to showcase their creativity. Pioneering Bands like Chandrabindoo, Cactus, Bhoomi, Fossils,ParashPathor have carved a niche’ for themselves in the Bangla music scenario with their own distinctive style of music and performances. What more could a music loving Kolkatan probably ask for??Bangla band music is like lifeblood for the average Bengali, they can relate to it; most of these popular songs portray the life of an average Bengali and his sentiments, his dreams and ambitions, his heartaches and infatuations, his joy and nostalgia, life and Death. Bangla music today is the life pulse and inspiration for average Bengalis. Men and women behind these bands have given up promising careers as doctors, salesmen, cartoonists teachers, businessmen to come together and make music which has awakened the Bengalis in doing something exclusive and more meaningful. The advent of Bangla Rock has resulted in the birth of a new breed of musicians who are prepared to defy almost any impediment that come their way, be it tradition, critics or even cultural limitations for the sake of music because to them music is a medium that transgresses all limits. To these new age rockers, music means rock and rock……. music.
